It was a busy end to 2024 and an even livelier start to 2025 at the Chop Shop.
In December, editing started on Pablo Trapero's (Elefante Blanco, Carancho) & SONS based on the 2004 bestseller by David Gilbert and adapted for the screen by Oscar-Winner Sarah Polley (Women Talking, Away From Her). The darkly-humoured drama stars Bill Nighy (Pirates of the Caribbean, Love Actually), Imelda Staunton (The Harry Potter Franchise, The Crown), George MacKay (1917, The End), Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place, Franklin), Johnny Flynn (Ripley, Emma) and Dominic West (The Wire, The Affair).
Scenes were being cut in the Chop Shop during production, with the 6-week shoot starting in December and continuing through January at locations in London, Oxford and Wokingham. & SONS is Pablo Trapero's English-language debut following La Quietud and El Clan which won Trapero the Silver Lion Best Director Award at the 2015 Venice Film Festival.
January also saw the network premiere of VICE TV's brand new doc-series Dark Side of the Cage the very first episode of which was #choppedhere. The series follows in the footsteps of it's hugely successful predecessor Dark Side of the Ring by taking a deep dive into the backstories of some of the most infamous scandals, public and private, from the world of MMA. The first episode looks into the meteoric rise to stardom of one of the sport's most controversial figures, Kimbo Slice, and how his story was cut so tragically short.
The show kicked off on January 8th, 2025 and a new episode is aired every Wednesday until March 12th.
More great news arrived in early 2025 with For The Culture with Amanda Parris being shortlisted in six categories at the Canadian Screen Awards including Best Picture Editing, Best Writing and Best Factual Series. It is a true honour to be in consideration for such a prestigious award from the Canadian Academy of Cinema and Television. Here's hoping for some nominations!
For The Culture is a point-of-view documentary series led by award-winning writer, executive producer and host Amanda Parris, who leaves the wars raging on social media to create space for urgent and provocative conversations that centre Blackness and Black folks. It is available to watch for free on CBC GEM.
Love this energy, 2025, let's keep it up!
